Pintail Blair Athol 12 Year Old Marsala Cask Finished Scotch Whisky
The Pintail Blair Athol 2011 12 Year Old Marsala Cask Finished Scotch Whisky is a single cask bottling from Keith Bonnington (Keeper of the Quaich). Marsala is the infamous fortified wine from the isle of Sicily (Italy) that has held DOC status since 1969. Marsala is aged in a Solera-style system that delivers complex flavours of carmelised brown sugars and a nutty-sweetness. This Pintail single cask bottling of a 12 Year Old Blair Athol had a 9 month finish in ex-Solera casks adding notes of demerara sugar, candied walnuts, dates and apricot-y flavours.
The Pintail brand was originally established by Matthew Gloag and Sons in the 1930's for bottling their dry sherries. After the trademark was allowed to lapse it was picked up by Keith Bonnington (Keeper of the Quaich and owner of The Whisky Cellars Independent Bottlers) to create a range of spirits and wines. With a focus on unusual bottlings, and whiskies finished in rare (and often sweet) wine casks, the Pintail range is built around a focus on extremely limited and desirable bottlings.
"Purveyors of Precious Wines & Spirits" is the tagline, with a focus on "precious"!
