Macallan Scotch Whisky
The Macallan Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Few distilleries have the global reach and following of the Macallan Distillery.
The Macallan distillery was one of the original 'farm distilleries' illicitly distilling until it was granted it's license in 1824 (post the 1823 Excise Act). From humble beginnings to one of the most premium of the scotch whisky brands and a true Speyside powerhouse producing circa 15 million litres per annum.
The Macallan has become one of the most collected whiskies globally.
Surprisingly for a distillery producing such enormous quantities, the spirit stills at the Macallan are only 3,900 litres. This small size combined with sharply descending lyne arms ensures a very rich and oily new-make spirit from minimising copper contact. These days most of the Macallan spirit is matured in 500 litre ex-Sherry casks, with the whisky hitting it's strides in the mid-teen years.
These days the distillery is owned by parent company, Edrington, which is inversely owned by The Robertson Trust that donates much of it's profits to charities across Scotland.
